Abstract

The increasing integration of renewable energy sources and the dynamic nature of modern electrical grids have intensified the need for efficient reactive power compensation and voltage stability mechanisms. Static Synchronous Compensators (STATCOMs), as flexible AC transmission system (FACTS) devices, have emerged as critical components for maintaining system stability and improving power quality. This paper presents a comprehensive study on the real-time simulation and controller design of STATCOM for reactive power compensation, with a strong emphasis on hardware-oriented implementation relevant to hardware engineers, embedded systems designers, and FPGA developers. The research develops a structured modeling framework for STATCOM operation, integrates advanced control strategies, and evaluates system performance under varying load and disturbance conditions. The proposed methodology is grounded in stability classification principles and control theory, ensuring robustness and adaptability. Simulation results demonstrate enhanced voltage regulation, improved transient response, and optimized reactive power support. The findings highlight the importance of real-time implementation in achieving accurate system behavior and underline the role of embedded and FPGA-based architectures in high-speed control execution. The study contributes to bridging the gap between theoretical modeling and practical deployment, offering a scalable approach for next-generation smart grids.
