Abstract

The rapid evolution of the Internet of Things has fundamentally transformed the way physical objects are sensed, identified, monitored, and controlled across digital networks. Among the enabling technologies of this paradigm, Radio Frequency Identification and Wireless Sensor Networks have emerged as two of the most influential components driving the automation and intelligence of logistics, manufacturing, and supply chain systems. When these two technologies are integrated, they create powerful hybrid infrastructures capable of real time data acquisition, object identification, environmental monitoring, and decision support across complex distributed environments. The purpose of this research article is to present an in depth theoretical, methodological, and analytical investigation of RFID and WSN integration within the broader context of Internet of Things driven smart logistics and cyber physical supply chains. Drawing strictly on the provided scholarly references, the article develops a unified conceptual and operational framework explaining how data is generated, transmitted, cleaned, secured, interpreted, and leveraged to enhance traceability, transparency, efficiency, and resilience across logistics and industrial ecosystems.
This study argues that RFID WSN hybrid architectures are not merely technical constructs but socio technical systems that reshape organizational processes, governance structures, and strategic decision making. By embedding sensing and identification capabilities into physical goods, logistics assets, and infrastructure, these systems create digital twins of physical flows, enabling real time situational awareness and predictive control. The article examines how early RFID and WSN research laid the foundations for modern IoT platforms, and how advances in communication protocols, power management, data analytics, and cloud computing have allowed these systems to scale into global supply networks. Special attention is given to the challenges of data quality, interoperability, energy efficiency, security, and cost effectiveness, which remain critical barriers to widespread adoption.
The methodology of this research is based on a systematic theoretical synthesis of the provided literature, integrating insights from engineering, information systems, operations management, and supply chain theory. Through a descriptive analytical approach, the article reconstructs how RFID and WSN technologies are deployed across smart logistics, warehouse management, cold chains, healthcare, manufacturing, and agricultural supply chains. The results demonstrate that integrated RFID IoT systems significantly improve visibility, reduce information asymmetry, enable automated decision making, and support new business models such as servitization and blockchain based traceability. The discussion explores the broader implications of these findings for Industry 4.0, cyber physical systems, and digital transformation, highlighting both the transformative potential and the unresolved risks associated with pervasive sensing and connectivity. The article concludes by outlining future research directions focused on intelligent edge computing, sustainable energy harvesting, and secure distributed data architectures.
