Abstract

The increasing complexity of modern power systems, exacerbated by the integration of distributed generation (DG) and renewable energy sources, necessitates robust fault detection and relay coordination mechanisms to ensure reliability and stability. This paper proposes an advanced framework for three-zone fault detection coupled with optimized distance relay coordination in electrical power distribution networks. The framework integrates high-precision measurement techniques, adaptive protection settings, and hardware-based processing to mitigate fault propagation and minimize system outages. Analytical models are developed to characterize the performance of distance relays under various fault scenarios, including line-to-ground, line-to-line, and three-phase faults, with consideration of distributed generation influences. Hardware-oriented simulations demonstrate improved detection speed, selectivity, and reliability compared to conventional protection schemes. The proposed framework also addresses challenges in coordination among relays across hierarchical network layers, ensuring selective tripping while maintaining system stability. Results highlight the critical role of hardware optimization in supporting real-time decision-making and fault isolation in modern power systems.
