Abstract

Radio Frequency Identification technology has evolved far beyond its original role as a simple identification and tracking mechanism and now occupies a central position in the development of large scale Internet of Things ecosystems. The convergence of UHF RFID sensing, localization, and communication has enabled a new class of cyber physical infrastructures that operate with minimal power, extreme scalability, and high economic efficiency. This research article presents a comprehensive theoretical and empirical synthesis of UHF RFID based sensing and localization systems for food quality monitoring, retail analytics, and intelligent transportation systems. Drawing exclusively on peer reviewed scientific literature and established technical references, the article develops a unified conceptual framework that explains how RFID sensors, localization algorithms, vehicular identification systems, and neural assisted signal processing models combine to create robust and intelligent IoT platforms.
The work begins by establishing the foundational role of RFID in the Internet of Things, highlighting how object level connectivity transforms traditional data acquisition into continuous environmental intelligence as proposed by Ashton and later expanded by Jia and Feng. The article then extends into the physical layer, explaining how biopolymer based RFID sensors provide flexible, sustainable, and chemically sensitive interfaces for monitoring food freshness and environmental conditions as demonstrated by Saggin and colleagues. From this material foundation, the study advances into spatial intelligence, detailing how interference based three dimensional localization, angle of arrival estimation, antenna diversity, and support vector regression enable high resolution tracking of both tagged and untagged objects within complex indoor and vehicular environments.
Special emphasis is placed on transportation systems, where RFID enabled tolling, vehicle identification, and lane monitoring create a real time traffic intelligence infrastructure that supports both safety and efficiency. The article integrates research on RFID based vehicular localization, magnetic loop hybrids, and gate control systems driven by convolutional neural networks to demonstrate how RFID has evolved into a decision making sensor network rather than a passive data carrier. Theoretical and practical trade offs related to duty cycle limitations, synchronization, industrial IoT constraints, and extreme environment deployment are critically analyzed to establish the operational boundaries of these systems.
By synthesizing sensing, localization, machine intelligence, and regulatory frameworks into a single analytical narrative, this article contributes a unified theoretical model for UHF RFID based IoT platforms. The findings demonstrate that RFID technology, when augmented by modern signal processing and neural inference, forms the backbone of scalable, low energy, and high reliability cyber physical systems capable of supporting the future of food safety, retail automation, and intelligent transportation networks.
