Abstract

Background: Precision agriculture is increasingly shaped by two parallel technological movements: the rise of deep learning for large-scale crop mapping and the rapid evolution of motion planning and control in intelligent robots. Yet these two streams often develop in isolation. Remote sensing studies have advanced phenology-aware vegetation mapping, spectral-spatial learning, and cloud-enabled agricultural observation, while robotics research has improved trajectory planning, balance control, motion reliability, and adaptive obstacle avoidance. However, orchard agriculture, particularly citrus systems, still lacks a coherent research framework that unifies deep perceptual understanding of orchard environments with motion-stable robotic intervention across heterogeneous field conditions.
Methods: This article develops a design-oriented original research framework through integrative analysis of literature on time-series orchard monitoring, vegetation index construction, spectral-spatial deep learning, large-scale visual recognition, agricultural robotic perception and coordination, and recent advances in manipulator, continuum, parallel, humanoid, and biped robot trajectory planning and stability assessment. The methodological contribution lies in synthesizing these references into a multilayer architecture for citrus orchard intelligence composed of remote perception, semantic scene interpretation, operational zoning, robot motion planning, and adaptive control.
Results: The analysis shows that orchard intelligence becomes substantially more robust when phenology-sensitive remote sensing is combined with deep residual feature extraction and when robotic planning is conditioned on environmental semantics rather than only geometric collision avoidance. The integrated framework indicates that citrus management can benefit from a linked pipeline in which long-term Landsat and Sentinel-2 monitoring identifies orchard variability, spectral-spatial networks interpret canopy and terrain conditions, and motion planning modules convert those conditions into task-aware safe trajectories for orchard robots. The findings also suggest that stability, reliability, and trajectory smoothness are not secondary implementation issues but central determinants of practical agricultural autonomy.
Conclusion: A next-generation citrus agriculture system should not treat mapping and robotics as separate domains. It should instead function as a closed perception-action loop in which orchard state estimation continuously informs adaptive robotic execution. This research offers a publication-ready conceptual and methodological foundation for that convergence and identifies future directions in multi-robot coordination, reliability-aware planning, seasonal adaptation, and field-deployable agricultural autonomy.
